Bishop Joseph Vu Duy Thong was born on July 2, 1952 in the northern Thai Binh diocese. After he was accompanied by his family on the exodus to the south in 1954 following the defeat of the French by Ho Chi Minh's Viet Minh guerrillas, he studied philosophy and theology at seminaries in Long Xuyen diocese and Sai Gon (now Ho Chi Minh City) archdiocese. After the country's reunification under communist rule in 1975, he had to make a living as other local seminarians, Religious and priests did by manual labor on state-run farms for one year. After he was ordained a priest for the archdiocese on Oct. 26, 1985, he furthered his studies at the Institut Catholique de Paris and obtained a Master's degree in theology in 1998. He was appointed auxiliary bishop of the archdiocese on July 04, 2001. His ordination was held at the Notre Dame Cathedral on Aug 17 that year. He was named Bishop of Phan Thiet diocese on July 25, 2009.

Bishop Thong, who composes and produces CDs of religious songs, also serves as head of the Episcopal Commission for Cultural Affairs. On 1 Mar 2017 he died.
