Bishop Jose Porunnedom was born at Vettimattam in Idukki district of Kerala on March 13, 1956. He completed his seminary studies at St. Joseph's Minor Seminary, Thalassery, St. Joseph's Seminary, Aluva and the Pontifical Urbanian University, Rome. He was ordained priest on Dec. 22, 1982. He served the archdiocese of Thalassery as a parish priest, secretary to Bishop Thoomkuzhy and chancellor of the diocese. In 1986, he went to Rome and obtained a doctorate in canon law from the Oriental Institute. In 1991, he returned to the dioceses and became epharchial judge.
He was appointed the third bishop of the eparchy of Mananthavady on March 18, 2004. He was consecrated as the bishop and took charge of the eparchy on May 15, 2004.
