Archbishop Thomas D'Souza was born on Aug. 26, 1950, in Mangalore diocese, southern India. He was ordained a priest on April 16, 1977, and was appointed Bishop of Bagdogra on June 14, 1997. Bagdogra is in the northern part of West Bengal state, whose capital is Kolkata (Calcutta). His episcopal ordination took place on Jan. 25, 1998.
Pope Benedict XVI appointed him Coadjutor Archbishop of Calcutta Archdiocese on March 12, 2011. He succeeded as Archbishop of Calcutta on Feb. 23, 2012. He serves as a member of the Commission for Education of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India.
