Salesian Bishop Soundaraj Periyanayagam was born on June 6, 1949, in Periya Kolappalur. He was ordained a priest on June 25, 1983, and appointed the sixth Bishop of Vellore on July 11, 2006. His installation and ordination as bishop took place on Aug. 24, 2006. He was the director of a boys' home run by the Salesians in Katpadi, Tamil Nadu, when he was announced the new bishop of the diocese.
