Bishop Jacob Mar Barnabas was born on Dec. 3, 1960 in Ranni of Pathanamthitta district of Kerala. He joined the order of Imitation of Christ in 1975 and took his first profession in 1979. He had his philosophy and theology studies at Jnana Deepa Vidhyapeeth (JDV) in Pune. His final profession was on May 15,1985.

Bishop Jacob Barnabas Chacko Aerath died on 26 Aug 2021.

He was ordained priest on Oct, 2, 1986, by Archbishop Benedict Mar Gregorios. The new priest was given the charge of religious formation for pre-novices; later he was sent to Academia Alfonsiana, Rome, for pursuing higher studies in moral theology.

Fr. Chacko Aerath served as superior of Bethany Ashram (monastery) and rector of Malanakara theology house in Pune, professor and dead of the department of pastoral and moral theology at JDV. He was elected as the first provincial superior of Bethany Navajyothi Province in 2000.
On Feb. 7, 2007, Pope Benedict XVI appointed him as the apostolic visitator with an episcopal character for the Malankara community in the extraterritorial regions in India and the titular bishop of Bapara.

The bishop was consecrated on March 10, 2007.

On March 26 Pope Francis appointed him the first bishop of the newly erected diocese of Gurgaon, near Delhi.
