Archbishop Peter Fernando was born on March 22, 1939, in Tuticorin. He was ordained a priest on May 29, 1971. He was appointed Coadjutor Bishop of Tuticorin on Feb. 23, 1996 and episcopally ordained on May 29, 1996. On Dec. 8, 1999, he became Bishop of Tuticorin. He was appointed Archbishop of Madurai on March 22, 2003. He is the fifth prelate of the archdiocese. Archbishop Fernando was the bishop of Tuticorin diocese before his appointment as the archdiocesan prelate. He is also now the chairman of the Tamil Nadu Bishops' Council.
