Archbishop Francis De Sales Kagithapu Mariadas was born on Sept. 7, 1936 in Gnanapuram in Visakhapatnam Diocese. He was ordained a priest on June 10, 1961 in the congregation of Missionaries of Francis de Sales. He was appointed bishop of Guntur on Dec. 19, 1974 and was ordained on May 5, 1977. On Sept. 10, 1982 he was transferred and appointed to the Diocese of Vishakapatnam. On Oct. 16, 2001 he became archbishop when Vishakapatnam was raised to a metropolitan. Before becoming a prelate, Archbishop Mariadas was a professor at St. Peter's Seminary in Bangalore. On July 3, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI accepted his resignation from the pastoral care of the Archdiocese of Vishakapatnam, upon having reached the age limit.
