rchbishop Joseph Augustine Charanakunnel was born on June 6, 1938, in Palai diocese in Kerala (South India). He was ordained a priest on May 15, 1975, and appointed Bishop of Raipur on Dec. 30, 1992. His episcopal ordination was on Feb. 7, 1993. Bishop Charanakunnel was installed Archbishop of Raipur on June 6, 2004. Before this, he was the Archdiocesan Administrator from 1991-1992, after the resignation of Bishop Philip Ekka, SJ. Prior to this, he was the Vicar General of the diocese.
