Archbishop Mar George Njaralakatt was born on June 23, 1946, at Kalayanthany, Thodupuzha, in the eparchy of Kothamangalam. In 1960, his family migrated to Malabar and settled in Nadavayal, Wayanad. He had obtained BA degree from Mysore University.

He had his Minor Seminary formation in St. Joseph's Minor Seminary Thalasserry, from 1963 to 1965, philosophy and theology studies at St. Joseph’s Pontifical Seminary, Alwaye, from 1965-1972. He was ordained priest on Dec. 20, 1971, at Thalassery by Mar Sebastian Valloppilly. He had his higher studies at Pontifical Salesian University in Rome (from Sept 1983 to December 1986) and obtained licentiate in in October 1986.

After the ordination he was appointed assistant parish priest at Kanichar in the archieparchy of Tellichery. On Jan. 18, 2010, he was appointed the bishop of the newly erected diocese of Mandya, in Karnataka and was consecrated on April 7, 2010, at Infant Jesus Cathedral Church at Hinkal, Mysore, and took charge of his office on the same day.

On Aug. 29, 2014, Pope Francis appointed Bishop Njaralakatt as the archbishop of Tellicherry. He took over from Archbishop George Valiamattam, who had resigned, having reached the retirement age of 75.
