Bishop Raphael Thattil was born on April 21, 1956, in Trichur in Kerala. He had his priestly formation at St. Thomas Apostolic Seminary, Vadavathoor. After his ordination in Dec. 21, 1980, he served as assistant vicar at Aranattukara (1981), vice chancellor of Curia (1988), vice rector of Minor Seminary (1991), director of Catechism (1992-1995), chancellor and eparchial judge (1995-2000) and syncellus and protosyncellus . He was appointed auxiliary bishop of Trichur and titular bishop of Buruni before he and was ordained bishop on April 10, 2010.

On Oct.10, 2017, he was appointed as the first bishop of Shamshabad diocese.
