Bishop Lawrence Mukkuzhy was born on Aug. 31, 1951, in Hosmota (Kadaba) as the seventh child in his family. After attending St. Joseph's Minor Seminary in Thalasserry, he did philosophy and theology studies at the Pontifical Seminary in Aluwaye and was ordained priest on Dec. 27, 1978. He went on to earn a master's degree in English literature from the University of Mysore.

Bishop Mukkuzhy served as a priest in several parishes of Tellicherry archdiocese before being appointed episcopal vicar of the Dakshina Kannada Mission and parish priest of St Alphonsa Church in Mangalore. He was appointed episcopal vicar for the Belthangady region in 1997.

Pope John Paul II appointed him as the first bishop of Belthangady when the new diocese was created on April 24, 1999. His ordination took place on August 4, 1999.
