It is believed that Christianity was introduced to India by Thomas the Apostle,
who is said to have reached the Malabar Coast of Kerala in 52 AD.

Bishop John Thomas Kattrukudiyil was born on Jan. 18, 1948 in Kadavoor in Kothamangalm diocese. He was ordained priest on Feb. 3, 1975, in the diocese of Diphu. He was appointed bishop of Diphu on June 10, 1994, and was ordained on Sept. 8 in the same year. On Dec. 7, 2005, he was transferred to the diocese of Itanagar and was installed on March 12, 2006, as the first bishop of Itanagar.

Before becoming a prelate, Bishop Kattrukudiyil was the rector of Oriens Theological College in Shillong. He is presently the secretary of North Eastern Bishops’ Council.
