Bishop Gerald Almeida was born on March 7, 1946 at Udyavar, a small town, in Mangalore diocese in Karnataka state. He hails from St. Francis Xavier's Parish at Udyavar.

Bishop Gerald had his early education at St. Francis Xavier's Middle School at Udyavar and at the local SVS High School.

Bishop Gerald had his seminary education at St. Augustine's Jabalpur and at St. Charles' Seminary at Nagpur, where he completed his philosophical studies and graduated from SFS College.

He was ordained a priest on Dec. 14, 1974.

He was appointed as the coadjutor bishop of Jabalpur on June 24, 1997. His episcopal ordination was held on Sept. 17, 1997. He took charge of the office on May 16, 2001.
