Archbishop Joseph Perumthottam was born on July 5, 1948, at Punnathura in Kottayam district, Kerala. He was ordained priest on Dec. 18, 1974, and nominated auxiliary bishop of Changanassery archdiocese on April 24, 2002. His episcopal ordination took place the following month on May 20. He was appointed archbishop on Jan. 22, 2007, the day Archbishop Joseph Powathil retired as head of the archdiocese. A well-known theologian, he had been teaching at St. Thomas Apostolic Seminary in Vadavathur, and the Missionary Orientation Center. He has written books on liturgy and Church history.
