Thirty members of a house church in China's southern Guangdong province were detained by Chinese authorities on July 10, says a report by rights organization China Aid.

The Christians were attending a weekly worship service at the Olive Tree Church in the city of Foshan when it was interrupted by officials from the religious affairs bureau and police, said the July 28 report.

The officials confiscated church property and then took the congregants to the police station where they were questioned. The church building was sealed and meetings were banned.

Most of the church members were released on the same day but four of them — including Jiang Jianping, a church leader — were held for four days.

Jiang was charged with "conducting activities in the name of a social organization without registration."

In 2014, the Olive Tree Church, and another church, were raided by police who detained six Christians. Police later issued notices saying those detained had been charged with "using a cult organization to undermine law enforcement."

Dear reader,
Lent is the season during which catechumens make their final preparations to be welcomed into the Church.
Each year during Lent, UCA News presents the stories of people who will join the Church in proclaiming that Jesus Christ is their Lord. The stories of how women and men who will be baptized came to believe in Christ are inspirations for all of us as we prepare to celebrate the Church's chief feast.
Help us with your donations to bring such stories of faith that make a difference in the Church and society.
A small contribution of US$5 will support us continue our mission…
