Police have ordered budget hotels in the southern Chinese city of Guangzhou to reject guests from five predominantly Muslim countries, say media reports.

Since March, low-end hotels have been receiving police notices that order them to turn away guests from Pakistan, Syria, Iraq, Turkey, and Afghanistan, reports Reuters.

China’s Foreign Ministry said it had never heard of the policy, said the report.

But several budget hotels told the wire agency that they had received the police notices as early as March.

"I'm not clear of the reason. We just can't take them," said a hotel worker.

All of the countries listed have suffered numerous terrorist attacks in the past few years or are currently undergoing serious conflict.

Dear reader,
Lent is the season during which catechumens make their final preparations to be welcomed into the Church.
Each year during Lent, UCA News presents the stories of people who will join the Church in proclaiming that Jesus Christ is their Lord. The stories of how women and men who will be baptized came to believe in Christ are inspirations for all of us as we prepare to celebrate the Church's chief feast.
Help us with your donations to bring such stories of faith that make a difference in the Church and society.
A small contribution of US$5 will support us continue our mission…
